Manufacturing AI is not the same conversation as drug discovery AI
The pharmaceutical AI narrative is dominated by drug discovery — molecular generation, target identification, clinical trial optimisation. These are legitimate applications, and some have produced real results. But they are also long-horizon, research-intensive, and capital-heavy. A pharmaceutical company that wants measurable AI value this year, from systems that deploy into existing manufacturing operations with proportionate validation effort, is looking at a different category of application entirely.
Manufacturing AI operates on data that already exists in pharmaceutical facilities: process parameter time series from historians and SCADA systems, environmental monitoring data from cleanroom sensors, visual inspection images from production lines, deviation records from quality management systems, and batch records that document every production run. The ML techniques required — time-series anomaly detection, computer vision classification, structured data pattern recognition — are mature, well-understood, and deployable on standard inference infrastructure. The challenge is not algorithmic novelty. Deployment reads from the existing process historian or SCADA system and writes alerts to the quality management system. Most pharmaceutical companies deploy initially in advisory mode (alert only, no automated process adjustment) to build confidence in the model’s predictions before considering closed-loop control, which carries higher GxP validation requirements.
Use case 2 — Automated visual inspection
Manual visual inspection is the quality gate for pharmaceutical packaging, labelling, and injectable product integrity. Human inspectors examine products at production line speed, identifying defects that range from visible particulates in vials to misaligned labels on cartons to damaged seals on blister packs. The structural limitation is well-documented: human detection rates decline over multi-hour shifts, inter-inspector variability introduces inconsistency, and throughput pressure creates a trade-off between inspection speed and inspection accuracy.
Computer vision replaces this trade-off with a consistent detection system that operates at production speed without fatigue-induced degradation. The typical deployment uses convolutional neural networks (often EfficientNet or ResNet variants) trained on labelled defect images from the specific production line. The sterile injectable inspection systems demonstrate the pattern: the CV system examines every unit, classifies each as pass or fail against documented acceptance criteria, and produces an audit trail that links each decision to the specific model version and input image.
The ROI is measurable in two dimensions: increased defect detection rate (catching defects that manual inspection misses) and reduced false-positive rate (fewer good products incorrectly rejected, which reduces rework and waste). Both metrics are auditable against the manual inspection baseline.
